The magic of Tuscia and Viterbo

Visit one of Italy's most charming small cities where popes and cardinals lived for many decades and are still buried

The magic of Tuscia and Viterbo

€155 per person

Visitando Italia is pleased to offer you a daily itinerary to discover Viterbo, the capital of Tuscia where art, nature and archeology cross in a scenic landscape of enchanting beauty.

We will visit the Etruscan Necropolis of Castel D’Asso, this necropolis develops along the cliffs that dominate the valley of the Freddano stream and is characterized by numerous tombs variously carved in the rock between the 7th and 2nd centuries BC, distributed over two or even three orders superimposed.

Afterwards we will continue our visit to Ferento. The archaeological area of Ferento was discovered in the early 20th century and, after a few decades of interruption, the excavations were then resumed after the war. Along the Via Ferentiensis, in addition to the ancient walls, you can see the remains of the Baths, the Forum and the imposing Theater that was built in the 1st century AD, in the north-eastern area of the city core and we will finalize the morning with the visit to the Rocca National Archaeological Museum, of which it is possible to appreciate a reconstruction of the theater scene, decorated with the statues of the Muses.

Free time for lunch.

Once the free time is over, we will visit the medieval Viterbo and the Palazzo dei Papi.
The historic center of Viterbo is one of the most typical examples of medieval architecture and in particular the San Pellegrino district, with its characteristic houses built on the tuff, contains a fascinating succession of enchanting views.

The main core of the historic center of Viterbo, however, is San Lorenzo hill which, in medieval times, was the official seat of the Popes and still today the papal palace continues to be the most symbolic place of that time. The building, in Romanesque style, is flanked by the monumental Cathedral dedicated to San Lorenzo.

The itinerary ends with a visit to Colle del Duomo Museum with the famous Sala del Conclave where the popes were elected.
